How to make DIY Cardboard Houses

 image from here.

We are currently working on a "UN Week" project for Tzu Chi Kindergarten in Jakarta. The plan is to make a city out of recycled cardboard boxes that have been dropped off at the Tzu Chi Recycling Centre.

As you know, used boxes have many prints on them and aren't in great condition as most of them have already been flattened for easy handling, so layers of paint and many masking tape details are needed to make the surface look smooth and even. The paint used is children safe food grade paint and doesn't cover very well, especially on the plastic cello tape. For this, all the tape must be either pulled of or covered in masking tape.

Here are a few pictures that have inspired us to make this project.

The tools needed are simple A LOT of boxes- various sizes, a sharp cutter, scissors, masking tape, metal ruler, pencils and tape. The houses are piled on one another or simple glued together.

DIY Painted Wooden Spoons

If you have a kitchen, it is almost likely that you have had at least 1 wooden spoon throughout you life. How do you remember that spoon to be? Just like any other spoon, it was 'just' a spoon. 'just' a kitchen utensil.
Why have "just" things lying around the house when you can have unique, meaningful pieces by just simple DIY-ing!

Here are some wooden & bamboo spoon DIY's that have been quite trending lately. From etching, drawing, painting or even ombre dyeing work.

DIY Using Washi Tape to Decorate Your Walls

Masking tape has long been used for the walls, but has now changed function. It used to be used for stencils/ creating borders on the wall and covering door and window frames from paint. However now it is widely used for decorating as it can be done in any way you like and can be changed from time to time.
Washi tape comes either plain or patterned and comes in multiple tones.
Here are a few ideas to use around the home.

Out the window with old, boring earth-tone planters and in with the new neon, graphic, polka dot pots.Whether you draw a face, add dots, or simply dip the pots in to paint, it can easily become the center of the room and make your plants look amazing!
Jazz up those herbs in the kitchen, or add a cactus or two to the bathroom.

DIY Teepees and Tents For Kids (and Folks Alike)

Image via The Boo and the Boy

At No Place Like HEIMA, we love kids and believe that there is a kid in everyone one of us. Whether it is designing for kids or simply getting inspired by them, these are no limits in designing in the imagination of a child. That is why it is essential to encourage and support a child in their play.

Parents often splurge on high end, expensive  toys believing that it will 'improve' their child just as the brand promotes. But at At No Place Like HEIMA, we encourage DIY-ing parents as parents know their child the best.

Most of our earliest memories were spent in tents, tree houses or under curtain and bed cover laden chairs and tables, and we had some serious fun in there, didn't we!
